Horizontal Geothermal Ground Loops:
Horizontal loops are less expensive than vertical. They work well when you have a combiation of new construction, a large plot of soil or clay based land, and an areas that don't experience extreme weather. They are called horizontal systems, because large trenches are dug into the ground only about six feet deep, and several hundred feet long. A back hoe or trencher does the work, and 400 to 600 feet of loop is laid for each ton of heating or cooling.
